What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR therapy is a highly effective and evidence-based treatment approach specifically designed to address the impact of trauma and help individuals process distressing memories and experiences. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and it was developed by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. EMDR therapy offers individuals the opportunity to achieve trauma resolution, emotional healing, and cognitive restructuring at an accelerated rate. Additionally, EMDR is natural and holistic. The EMDR process acknowledges the interconnectedness of mind and body, in that traumatic experiences impact not only your psychological well-being but also your physical sensations and beliefs.
How Does EMDR Therapy Work?
During an EMDR therapy session, you will be guided through a structured and comprehensive process that integrates elements of cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, and bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation involves rhythmic eye movements, taps, or sounds that alternate between the left and right sides of your body. The purpose of bilateral stimulation is to activate both sides of your brain, facilitating the processing of traumatic memories and reducing their emotional intensity. By engaging in bilateral stimulation while focusing on specific traumatic memories, thoughts, or beliefs, EMDR therapy allows for the reprocessing of these experiences and the integration of adaptive and healthy insights.
